Description

The Church of the Transfiguration is located 7 km from Batumi and 800 m from the center of Akhalsheni. The cross-domed temple is located on the shore of the river Bartshana, 100 meters above sea level. It is built in the early twentieth century, of cobblestone and cut stone. The width of the building is 11 meters, the length including the altar is 16 meters, and the height with the dome is 21 meters. The temple was built by the Pontic Greeks, who settled here after the Russo-Turkish War of 1878.
