Gonio-Apsaros Fortress is an important historical monument in Georgia. Due to its strategic location, the fortress built by the Romans in the first century was a stronghold of the Byzantines (VI - VII centuries) and later of the Ottoman Empire (XVI century). There is a museum on the territory of the fortress, where rich and diverse material extracted during archeological excavations is kept.

The sacred parts of Saint Matthias, one of the twelve apostles, is believed to be inside the Gonio fortress. That is why you will find the symbolic tomb of the apostle here.

The legend about the Argonauts is closely connected with the fortress. According to the legend, the son of Aeetes, Absyrtus, is buried on the territory of the fortress, which is why the fortress was called the fortress of Apsaros, and later the fortress of Gonio.
